Imagination

Yesterday at our community group our devotional was on the imagination. Imagionation is one of the greatest gifts from God. It gives us the ability to concieve of what might possibly be, of the goodness that my lay ahead, of so much of what we cannot normally concieve.

Without our imagination the sun would merely be a large mass of hydrogen being converted into heavy metals while emitting light in various wavelengths. The stars would be other large masses of hydrogen which are just farther away. Our whole lives would be simply biological processes which do certain necessary activities on a moment by moment basis. Our imagination is what brings us life, beauty, and most importantly of all, purpose to these things.

Yes, God gives these things but without his gift of imagination we cannot glimpse it. God never says why he made the sun, but by our immagionation we imagine that it was to give us warmth, light, and to be a symbol for him to use... a sign pointing towards Him.

C.S. Lewis has a quote that says that when we point at something a Dog looks at the finger that points but humans see the finger and see it as a sign pointing to something else. Imagination is what allows us to see this world as a finger pointing towards God.
